Update!

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 15, 2007, 2:52 PM
  • Mood: Happy
  • Listening to: Crap on the radio.
  • Reading: An article I'm helping to draft.
Well, it's been almost 6 months since my last journal - stupid length of time really. Ok, news:

I'm working. It's not medical though, I'm doing this really crappy job in a dry cleaners for sub-minimum wage. Still, it's better than the dole, I was a year on the dole and I didn't see a penny until after I got work. Even then it was only £350 the miserly bastards. I'm looking for work that suits me better on the back of this however, so stay tuned...

I got engaged on new years day, right after midnight! She's a deviant and an activist, you can find her at ~Individual00. She lives in Leeds, which is a long way from London, so I'll be moving there if I can find a job there. I may end up crashing in her bed for a while but I don't think either of us will mind that...

Things are slow on the activism front right now, partly cos aint much happening, and partly because I'm stuck working 10 hours every saturday. Got G8 in the summer though, and DSEi in September, so the year shouldn't be a complete waste of time. I should probably use the down time to brush up on old skills.

On the subject of Charing Cross - for those who know what I'm referring to - I may be about to move onto the next step. More on that elsewhere. It took a lot of hassle though, a bloody lot of hassle!

ah if it were only that simple , its only been recently that the BNP has been getting votes- they've been around a long time when they weren't -although I agree that ultimately you are right.
Combat 18- shudder

~Lividia:iconLividia: May 10, 2006, 1:33:45 PM
Who says cutting off BNP support and addressing social issues aren't one and the same? Sure, we could use the same tactics as combat 18, but that'd be counterproductive. The BNP relies on votes, no votes = no BNP, and they're only getting votes because social issues are going un-dealt with.

lol- of course I'd forgotten about that. Don't get me started on SWP- so many issues about then even in the 70s and 80s when I was active- its was always a laugh asking about where they got their funding from. Not sure if you know about this- bygones really a million years ago
Its an interesting conudrum if we want democracy should allow the extremes- remember I saw the exteme of socialism and anything in excess a strength become a weakness. If we don't want extremes then how do we ensure that- and in ensuring that how do we not become an extreme!
Re voting does it really matter who we vote for at this time.
As for BNP surely its society that we need to remedy peoples behaviour reflects a multitude of things and disadvantage, poverty. Cutting things off tend to be like hydra heads- you cut it and two more grows. We've got to address the underlying reasons for the hatred and fear and build a more equal society - although thinking about it I guess that this is what you mean its just that we are coming at the same solution from different approaches , a weird type of soul sisters =D

By killing I wasn't referring to murder, but cutting off any possibility of support for the Nazis. I was also referring to an SWP pamphlet at the time which was called Killing the Nazi Menace. Nowadays the SWP has it's ventriloquist hand up UAF's arse saying that A) the BNP have democratic rights and B) that we should vote Tory if necessary rather than BNP. Surely cutting the BNP off at the knees is a much more effective approach.

lots give a fuck just got worn down by it all- you'll see what I mean, it may not happen to you but you'd be surprised who it does- and who sells out- lol
ANL-well only a few talked about killing( and most of us really didn't like that ) but of course that bit was well publicised many of us were and are pacifists. The societal changes over the 70s and 80s are now unbelivable. Stuff that many take for granted. When I was 13+ Coventry was really rough, lots of alcohol and glassing " too much fighting on the dance floor!" .They meant Tiffanies which is now the library. I only went there a couple of times as it was mainly young girls trying to cop off with older men- yuck ( although having gone to a straight club a couple of years ago nothing seems to have changed) never had time for that.
I'm a Consultant in Public Health- I thought about being a doctor but wanted to make a difference for real people so became an environmental health officer, then did x year community development with a public health specialism in a Local Authority, then joined the NHS then became a Consultant- there are more and more of us none medics within Public Health we just have to demonstrate we are working at a senior enough level by retrospecitive portfolio- dullest work ever.
My remit is to reduce health inequalities and increase social inclusion. I also have the remit around tobacco control and sensible drinking- a very challenging brief! Big problems developing around this. Also Community Safety- can you imagine working with the police! my mum and dad thought it very funny. Would have never believed it x years ago but there is so much changed in the police- its still got a long way to go but I've had to change my mind about a lot. Yep they know some of my history- never charged although frequently arrested. That's what they tended to do to many of the women you just got a whole lot of verbal Told you things had changed =D
Thatcher has etched an acid stain on the soul of this country. We have a pm who admires her- think that speaks volumes. A freind of mine who was very active in gay rights found out that she was being transfered onto a plane with him in America. He got off- couldn't live with the idea that he'd share her recyled air. Thats how many of us still feel
Thanks about your kind words about my gallery- keep in touch

Nice to meet an activist from those days who still gives a fuck, you seem to be few and far between. Too much of the old activism has been watered down and resold to the generation that considers it the height of militancy to wear a Che t-shirt. Rock against racism for instance is now run by unite against fascism, a bunch of nutters if ever I saw one. Your generation spoke of killing the nazi menace, mine wants tea and scones with the nazi menace, bring back the ANL.

It's also nice to meet someone who perhaps remembers Coventry how I do, ie: when there was work and less skag. Methinks Nostradamus wrote for The Specials...

Public health sounds good, what kind of stuff do you do? I'm halfway through pre-med, doubling that up with a diploma in human anatomy, gonna do med school after that. Gonna have crippling debts when I'm done, but nursing just isn't giving me the kind of autonomy that I want.

As for Thatcher - did she really leave? Or is she wearing a rubber mask in the likeness of one A. Blair? Me and a comrade have two somewhat idle plans for when she snuffs it - we're either gonna put a dance mat on her grave and bring a DJ, or we're gonna put a portaloo on there and charge admission. All proceeds towards campaigning, et cetera...

I like your gallery, great pics and seemingly from a diverse range of places. Very cool.

interesting site  came via reference to the Dive in Coventry- I was there a long time before you were born hun- it didn't change for years.
Great to see young people giving a toss about something- I was the last of my generation before Thacher got her claws into turning every one into the me society, for ages there were no young people joining or giving much of a damn, ecology was many peoples route back into polticisation. Have some heritage Greenham, Blair Peach, Anti-apartid, Rock against racisim, Miners strike, Gay Pride (used to be called that-even thats been sanitised- lol) ( arrested twice, no charges)My friend died a few months after Terrence Higgins so got into HIV work and then public health. So now, well I'm an activist but in a different way- public health, trying to reduce povery and inequality playing the systems. When I was younger I don't think I would have approved of some of me now  however we make our difference as we can- I know i've saved lives. I'm sure that some of what you are doing is saving society =D
Interesting to see your links with Eastern Europe I knew it pre the wall coming down as well as during and after.I was in Czechosolvakia, East Germany ( admittedly I shouldn't have been there, bit of a sneek in visit for a coupe of days in the chaos and disinterest before the fall of the wall) and Poland. Seems such a long time ago now. Anyway great to see your stuff
